It&#8217;s a inherently <em>theological<\/em> pursuit that demands we reflect deeply on our relationships regularly.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>We asked some of our team to give us a few favorite books from 2019, and we\u2019ve got a list below, in no particular order. Kendi<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><em>(Submitted by <a href=\"https:\/\/gravitycommons.com\/es\/matt-tebbe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Matt Tebbe<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Okay full disclosure: I was an American History major in undergrad so I nerd out on this stuff, but this book is so well written, so engaging, and so profoundly important I think any in our Gravity Leadership Community would dig it.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Kendi traces the history of America through the lives of five people, black and white, to tell our history of how racist ideas have created racist policies. Whenever Kendi quoted a racist idea, I found myself thinking, &#8220;That&#8217;s not racist!&#8221; but on further reflection realized it <em>was<\/em>. Instead, it presents a very doable, down-to-earth way of &#8220;resisting in place&#8221; the exploitative forces around us that seek to squeeze us into a capitalist-consumerist mold. Lots of parallels to the &#8220;uselessness&#8221; of worship and the politics of being the church (ala Hauerwas, etc).<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Unsettling Truths: The Ongoing, Dehumanizing Legacy of the Doctrine of Discovery<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\r\n<figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0830845259\/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=bensblog04-20&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=0830845259&amp;linkId=3d9504cb2c68c42833a8540c45f5fca9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21416\" src=\"https:\/\/gravitycommons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/unsettling.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0830845259\/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=bensblog04-20&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=0830845259&amp;linkId=3d9504cb2c68c42833a8540c45f5fca9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Unsettling Truths: The Ongoing, Dehumanizing Legacy of the Doctrine of Discovery (opens in a new tab)\">Unsettling Truths: The Ongoing, Dehumanizing Legacy of the Doctrine of Discovery<\/a><\/em>, by Mark Charles and Soong-Chan Rah<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><em>(Submitted by <a href=\"https:\/\/gravitycommons.com\/es\/seth-richardson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Seth Richardson<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>As Rah argued in his earlier work, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0830833609\/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=bensblog04-20&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=0830833609&amp;linkId=daa4f1ac4792b117e8ec8fb00c77eb56\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"The Next Evangelicalism (opens in a new tab)\">The Next Evangelicalism<\/a><\/em>, the evangelical church in North America is not shrinking. It\u2019s thriving and growing &#8230; <em>among minority and immigrant communities<\/em>. For those leaders (namely, white middle-class men like me) who want to understand how the Spirit is forging faithful communities on the edges of Christendom, rather than desperately try to recover the old models, Rah\u2019s new book, co-authored with Mark Charles, is vital.<br \/><em><br \/>Unsettling Truths<\/em> is an uncomfortable read at times, but it is necessary prophetic word for detoxing from idolatrous theological and ecclesiological habits. For those pastors who are interested in grounding their ministry contextually, Charles and Rah also do a great job of summarizing important sociological analysis from the past 50 years. Similar in beauty to the prayers in P\u00e1draig \u00d3 Tuama&#8217;s\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B074XCYJZ5\/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=bensblog04-20&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B074XCYJZ5&amp;linkId=ae7b6ca90ff43a6e209402ad135b531b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Daily Prayer with the Corrymeela Community (opens in a new tab)\">Daily Prayer with the Corrymeela Community<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>Haas gives words and voice to the deep unworded yearnings for love in my soul. These are prayers to simmer in, settle in; not to finish. I am deeply grateful for the grace and beauty of this book.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Laurus<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\r\n<figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/178074871X\/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=bensblog04-20&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=178074871X&amp;linkId=0a598affd0fac5e37dc549d3feab79b7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21412\" src=\"https:\/\/gravitycommons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/laurus.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/178074871X\/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=bensblog04-20&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=178074871X&amp;linkId=0a598affd0fac5e37dc549d3feab79b7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Laurus (opens in a new tab)\">Laurus<\/a><\/em>, by Eugene Vodolazkin<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><em>(Submitted by <a href=\"https:\/\/gravitycommons.com\/es\/ben-sternke\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ben Sternke<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>This is a very Russian novel in the spirit of Dostoevsky&#8217;s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0374528373\/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=bensblog04-20&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=0374528373&amp;linkId=8f36abc21fb401f243225da0a59c1f16\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"The Brothers Karamazov (opens in a new tab)\">The Brothers Karamazov<\/a><\/em>. It&#8217;s difficult to describe, but the story made a deep impression on me. The main character is a &#8220;holy fool&#8221; that is a Christ-figure of sorts.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>It&#8217;s whimsical, heart-breaking, hilarious, fantastical, and deeply theological. I couldn&#8217;t stop reading it. I think I finished it in just a few days. It&#8217;s been awhile since a novel so fully captured my imagination like that. Highly recommended. Maybe read it over Christmas break?<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\r\n<p>Angels do not tire, said the Angel, because they do not scrimp on their strength. If you are not thinking about the finiteness of your strength, you will not tire, either.
