It&#8217;s a inherently <em>theological<\/em> pursuit that demands we reflect deeply on our relationships regularly.<\/p>\n<p>We asked our team to give us a few favorite books from 2018, and we\u2019ve got a list below, in no particular order. Green<\/p>\n<p><em>(Submitted by <a href=\"https:\/\/gravitycommons.com\/matt-tebbe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matt Tebbe<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A book on how to work through a deconstruction and reconstruction of who God is, written by a Pentecostal, quoting primarily from Christian and Catholic contemplatives and mystics. If that doesn\u2019t make you want to read this book\u2026.I don\u2019t know what will.<\/p>\n<p>Only 83 pages so it the volume of it won\u2019t overwhelm you, but it was so incredibly helpful. I could only read a few pages at a time because the insights had to digest.<\/p>\n<p>Also, check out <a href=\"https:\/\/gravitycommons.com\/podcast\/rediscovering-god-chris-green\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">our podcast interview with Chris Green<\/a>. What were those truths? How did they empower a revolution? How did early church pastors and theologians use the Apostles\u2019 Creed as the essential guide to the basics of the Christian life?<\/p>\n<p>Ben Myers re-introduces that creed, showing it to be deeply counter-cultural, and the truths embedded within it revolutionary still today.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1>Introducing Christian Mission Today: Scripture, History and Issues<\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0830840478\/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=bensblog04-20&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=0830840478&amp;linkId=7dc991cd217a8b155bdb3893cfcbe4bd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-15894 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/gravitycommons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/missiontoday-203x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"203\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0830840478\/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=bensblog04-20&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=0830840478&amp;linkId=7dc991cd217a8b155bdb3893cfcbe4bd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Introducing Christian Mission Today: Scripture, History and Issues<\/em><\/a>, by Michael W. Goheen<\/p>\n<p><em>(Submitted by <a href=\"https:\/\/gravitycommons.com\/mac-mccarthy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mac McCarthy<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This is the single best overview I&#8217;ve read on missional theology. While written at a level everyone can digest, Goheen also brings together the most relevant scholarship. It&#8217;s theologically rich, historically insightful, and intensely practical.<\/p>\n<p>If you are looking for a solid introduction to all things missional, this would be my top choice. This volume is both accessible and comprehensive.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1>The Christian Imagination: Theology and the Origins of Race<\/h1>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0300171366\/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=bensblog04-20&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=0300171366&amp;linkId=b170fbb55cd93c08db87c102c8a63253\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-15890 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/gravitycommons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/imagination-194x300.jpg\" alt=\"The Christian Imagination, by Willie James Jennings\" width=\"194\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0300171366\/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=bensblog04-20&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=0300171366&amp;linkId=69b03c40339364b5036401d98168849d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Christian Imagination: Theology and the Origins of Race<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>by Willie James Jennings<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>(Submitted by <a href=\"https:\/\/gravitycommons.com\/matt-tebbe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matt Tebbe<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This may be the most difficult book I\u2019ve ever read, from both a technical and spiritual perspective. Technically, the prose is thick, the argument complex, the language foreign to me in many ways. I had to work more than normal to grasp the overall argument . But, it was worth it because this is hands down the best book I read this year.<\/p>\n<p>Spiritually, this book confronted me with the cultural heritage of my evangelical faith and how indebted it is to the Western colonial project. It deals with race, theology, identity, and the centrality of Jesus in all of it. Can\u2019t recommend highly enough.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1>Prayer<\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0898700744\/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=bensblog04-20&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=0898700744&amp;linkId=f9097ab9a0fa2ebbaa03690773013460\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-15899 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/gravitycommons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/prayer-195x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"195\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0898700744\/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=bensblog04-20&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=0898700744&amp;linkId=f9097ab9a0fa2ebbaa03690773013460\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Prayer<\/em><\/a>, by Hans Urs Von Balthasar<\/p>\n<p><em>(Submitted by <a href=\"https:\/\/gravitycommons.com\/ben-sternke\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ben Sternke<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I wasn&#8217;t expecting this book, but it completely blew me away. It&#8217;s been called the best and most comprehensive book on prayer ever written.<\/p>\n<p>From the persons of the Trinity through the Incarnation to the Church and the very structure of the human person, this book is a powerful synthesis of what prayer is and how to pray.<\/p>\n<p>Balthasar is a great theologian, but this book gives an intimate and illuminating glimpse into his own practice of and reflection on that most personal and interior of actions: contemplative prayer.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1>Overcoming the Dark Side of Leadership: How to Become an Effective Leader by Confronting Potential Failures<\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0801068355\/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=bensblog04-20&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=0801068355&amp;linkId=f7a8fce8ef1c7f91b4122115cd48eece\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-15895\" src=\"https:\/\/gravitycommons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/darkside-195x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"195\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0801068355\/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=bensblog04-20&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=0801068355&amp;linkId=f7a8fce8ef1c7f91b4122115cd48eece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Overcoming the Dark Side of Leadership: How to Become an Effective Leader by Confronting Potential Failures<\/em><\/a>, by Gary L. Rima<\/p>\n<p><em>(Submitted by <a href=\"https:\/\/gravitycommons.com\/mac-mccarthy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mac McCarthy<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>While history is replete with leadership fails, over the last few decades it seems we have witnessed a surge among Christian leaders. Some of the most prominent and well known faces to evangelical Christianity have fallen morally, leaving a wake of hurt and pain for all those trusting in their leadership.<\/p>\n<p>In this book, McIntosh and Rima seek to address this growing and disturbing trend. Every leader has a shadow side. I was struck again and again how what seems ordinary and normal to me is culturally and racially shaped.<\/p>\n<p>A quick read, her story has stayed with me and continues to help me reflect on my own complicity in male-centered, white-centered cultures. But it was good medicine for [my soul], for the painful split between what I knew about God and what I experienced of Him.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This is an excellent introduction to practicing Lent in a life-giving way.\u00a0Aaron (an Anglican pastor with a low-church background) explains the season of Lent theologically, historically, and practically. He shares wisdom on how to practice it in a way that can form and shape your habits and convictions.<\/p>\n<p>He also talks practically about how to lead others through practicing Lent, so it&#8217;s especially good book for pastors looking to lead congregations through a meaningful experience of Lent. and guides you in its practice.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1>Resilient Leadership 2.0: Calm, Clarity, and Conviction in Anxious Times<\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1978014740\/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=bensblog04-20&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=1978014740&amp;linkId=8410f5ab513a4cdec48a09291ce2cb48\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-15896 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/gravitycommons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/resilient-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1978014740\/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=bensblog04-20&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=1978014740&amp;linkId=8410f5ab513a4cdec48a09291ce2cb48\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Resilient Leadership 2.0: Calm, Clarity, and Conviction in Anxious Times<\/em><\/a>, by Bob Duggan &amp; Bridgette Theurer<\/p>\n<p><em>(Submitted by <a href=\"https:\/\/gravitycommons.com\/mac-mccarthy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mac McCarthy<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>We live in an age of discontinuous change and heightened anxiety. Change almost always provokes anxiety. Leaders who want to lead change, therefore, must learn how to be a non-anxious presence &#8211; a &#8220;step down transformer&#8221; &#8211; thereby lowering the anxiety within those they are leading.<\/p>\n<p>Drawing on the best system theorists (Murray Bowen &amp; Ed Friedman), Duggan &amp; Theurer have produced a simple leadership guidebook that helps leaders &#8216;think systems&#8217; and embody a mature emotional presence.<\/p>\n<p>This book will challenge you to be the right kind of leader to whom such tools and practices can be entrusted. It will challenge your character, elevate your competency, and increase your capacity as a leader.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>How about you?
