They\u2019re also generally concerned with logic, order, process, and development.<\/p>\n<p>In our churches, they typically are found looking for ways to help others understand and live out Scripture. In the \u201cfivefold gifting\u201d framework, these are the\u00a0<em><strong>teachers<\/strong><\/em> among us. But, like the other types, their gifting can be present in\u00a0<em>immature<\/em> form. For teachers, this means they can become\u00a0\u201ccerebral\u201d Christians, elevating information above practice.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->It\u2019s important for us as leaders to be able to recognize the immature teachers among us, and disciple them to maturity so they can fulfill their ministry in the Body of Christ.<\/p>\n<p>But discipling a teacher is a lot different than discipling someone gifted in another way, so let\u2019s talk about the unique challenges and opportunities of discipling immature teachers.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11638\" src=\"https:\/\/gravitycommons.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/nose-in-a-book.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" \/><em>(This article is part of <a href=\"https:\/\/gravitycommons.com\/apest\/\">a series on discipleship and APEST<\/a>, and it\u2019s adapted from an article I\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thev3movement.org\/2016\/07\/how-to-spot-an-immature-teacher\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">originally published for the V3 Movement<\/a>.) These gifts are actually\u00a0<em>people<\/em>\u00a0that God has gifted and then given to the church\u00a0to build it up and bring it to maturity and unity.<\/p>\n<p>(This is sometimes called\u00a0<strong>APEST<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Apostles, Prophets, Evangelists, Shepherds, Teachers.\u00a0If you\u2019ve never heard of this, check out\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theforgottenways.org\/what-is-apest.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alan Hirsch\u2019s brief descriptions<\/a>, or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vy-B0OJ4Ie4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">JR Woodward\u2019s video introduction<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>Paul\u2019s assumption is that the church needs to grow into the fullness of her identity in Christ, and that these five gifts are crucial to that happening.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, we\u00a0<em>need<\/em>\u00a0teachers in our churches if we\u2019re going to grow into maturity. The problem is that mature teachers don\u2019t grow on trees. Teachers normally come to our churches immature, in need of encouragement and shaping. How can we do this faithfully and effectively?<\/p>\n<h1>You might be a teacher if\u2026<\/h1>\n<p>Before we talk about\u00a0<em>immature<\/em>\u00a0teachers, let\u2019s talk about teachers in general. How are they Christ\u2019s gift to the church?<\/p>\n<p>Teachers are people who are motivated to help people learn and grow. JR Woodward calls them Light Givers, people whose primary concern is \u201cthat the community inhabits the sacred text<\/p>\n<p>[of the Bible]<\/p>\n<p>. They create a learning environment where people immerse themselves in the scriptures in order to be formed by them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here are some signs of teachers in general:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They are drawn to the Scriptures and are often intensely hungry to read, study, and memorize Scripture.<\/li>\n<li>They desire to help other people understand the truths of God\u2019s Word.<\/li>\n<li>They are often concerned with logic, order, process, and development.<\/li>\n<li>They have a gift for outlining comprehensive curricula and systems.<\/li>\n<li>They lean toward proven systems to \u201cget the job done\u201d vs. new (unproven) ideas.<\/li>\n<li>They often ask tough questions that can lead to greater clarity for everyone.<\/li>\n<li>They help \u201coperationalize\u201d the dreams and visions of apostles and prophets.<\/li>\n<li>They like to see established track records of success before doing something different. \u201cIf it isn\u2019t broken, don\u2019t fix it,\u201d is a typical mantra.<\/li>\n<li>They look for ways to explain, enlighten, and apply Scripture.<\/li>\n<li>They often make excellent coaches and mentors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1>Signs of an immature teacher<\/h1>\n<p>But teachers need to grow from immaturity to maturity, just like all of us.\u00a0Their greatest strength is also their greatest weakness.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here are some signs of an immature teacher:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In their hunt for clarity, they can offend people with their bluntness. Immature teachers lack empathy.<\/li>\n<li>They can get so enamored with order that they\u2019re unwilling to endure any kind of ambiguity.<\/li>\n<li>They can get so attached to stability that they\u2019re unwilling to take risks or try something new.<\/li>\n<li>In their desire to know the truth and make truth known, they may end up \u201ccerebral\u201d Christians, elevating information intake over above practical obedience.<\/li>\n<li>More than any other type, teachers are prone to become Pharisees: content that they know and do the \u201cright\u201d things, setting up certain knowledge and behavior requirements as litmus tests for being a \u201cserious\u201d Christian.<\/li>\n<li>In their desire to teach and train people, they have a tendency to keep people \u201cin the nest\u201d too long, fearing they aren\u2019t \u201cready\u201d until they take just one more class.<\/li>\n<li>When in senior leadership roles, they can become \u201csermon machines,\u201d leaving day-t0-day discipleship and leadership to others and assuming the \u201cmain\u201d thing the church needs is teaching.<\/li>\n<li>Like <a href=\"https:\/\/gravitycommons.com\/disciple-immature-shepherd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shepherds<\/a>, they like to be needed. While shepherds like to be needed for the care and help they provide, teachers like to be needed for their wisdom and insight.<\/li>\n<li>They can become \u201cdevil\u2019s advocates\u201d with their questions about new ideas, creating a wet blanket effect on leadership teams.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Does any of this\u00a0remind you of anyone? Maybe you\u2019ve got an immature teacher in your church.\u00a0Maybe you notice these characteristics in yourself?<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important to have teachers present in a church\u00a0situation because when people become new Christians through evangelism, you\u2019ll need people who are excited to develop learning environments for those new Christians to grow in the basics of the faith.<\/p>\n<p>So one temptation is to\u00a0<em>use<\/em>\u00a0an immature teachers as\u00a0\u201ccontent developer\u201d that helps people assimilate into your community. The immature teacher will love this because people now \u201cneed\u201d their knowledge\u2026 but it sets up a \u201cmutual using society\u201d that is a poor substitute for real covenant community.<\/p>\n<p>Also \u2013 especially if you\u2019re an apostle \u2013 you might experience teachers as people who are always asking pesky questions about HOW you\u2019re going to pull things off! Because of this, it can be tempting to <em>reject<\/em> an immature teacher as a pessimist.<\/p>\n<p>But immature teachers need to be discipled, not used or rejected. <em><strong>How do we disciple immature teachers when we find them in our churches?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<h1>How to disciple an immature teacher<\/h1>\n<p>In some ways, what teachers need to grow in discipleship is the same thing that everyone needs:\u00a0<strong>an abundance of both grace and truth<\/strong>\u00a0(this is one of the main competencies we train for in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gravitycommons.com\/find-your-center\/\">our coaching<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>We calibrate grace in discipleship by offering connection and compassion in an authentic relationship. We calibrate truth in discipleship by holding\u00a0<em>reality<\/em>\u00a0in front of others non-anxiously.<\/p>\n<p>This calibration looks different for a teacher than it does for an shepherd or evangelist. The grace and truth they need takes on a certain shape.\u00a0<strong>So what does grace and truth look like for\u00a0teachers?<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Offering grace to an immature teacher<\/h2>\n<p>Here are a few notes on bringing grace to a\u00a0teacher:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Take their bluntness in stride.<\/strong> They don\u2019t mean to be rude \u2013 remember they\u2019re probably just seeking clarity.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Listen to their \u201cHOW?\u201d questions.<\/strong> They aren\u2019t trying to shoot down ideas, they\u2019re just interested in how things will actually get done.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Listen to their frustrations about the lack of organization<\/strong> in your church and empower them to do something about it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Give them opportunities to teach<\/strong> others in appropriate ways.<\/li>\n<li>Understand that <strong>their \u201cevangelism\u201d will often take place among nominal Christians<\/strong> rather than the unchurched. <strong>Empower them to do this;<\/strong> tell them it\u2019s important work.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Listen to them to learn from them<\/strong>, and tell them when you learned something from them. This is a way of honoring the gift they are to you and the church.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Empower them to develop systems to implement vision<\/strong>, then give them the time and space they need (alone) to work on this stuff!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Offering truth to an immature teacher<\/h2>\n<p>Here are a few notes on bringing truth to an immature teacher:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Teachers need to embrace empathy for others<\/strong>, but it\u2019s hard for them because they oftentimes think of it as \u201cweak.\u201d Help them realize how powerful it is and encourage them to truly empathize with others.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Encourage them to trust that the Holy Spirit can \u201cfill in the gaps\u201d<\/strong> in people\u2019s knowledge, and that he\u2019ll often do so as they\u2019re on mission. Help them see places in Scripture where Jesus sent people out with almost no theological knowledge whatsoever!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Encourage them to have an apprentice at all times<\/strong>, someone that is learning to teach like they teach, so they can pass along what they know how to do.<\/li>\n<li>Remind them that their job is to equip the body of Christ to <strong>live out truth, not just understand it<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Draw their attention to their tendency to make people dependent on them.<\/strong> Challenge them to \u201cwork themselves out of a job\u201d by teaching people toward competence, not just clarity.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Teachers can get so convinced by their own theological framework that they create a little enclave within the church for people who \u201creally get it.\u201d<\/strong> They sometimes need to be challenged to hold less rigidly to watertight theological systems. This is really hard for them, though, because they tend to associate their ideas about God with God himself. Letting go of those ideas feels like \u201cheresy\u201d (they may say this when you challenge them about this!).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A mature teacher\u00a0is a wonderful gift for a church plant to have. They can create catechetical frameworks and classes that\u00a0deepen people\u2019s understanding and practice of faith.<\/p>\n<p>But they don\u2019t just fall into your lap magically. Churches often have to disciple their team into maturity before they can lean on their team to disciple others into maturity.<\/p>\n<h1>Questions for reflection and discussion<\/h1>\n<p><strong>Do you know an immature teacher? Reflect on your experience with them.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What did you find frustrating? What was invigorating?<\/li>\n<li>What have you done well?
