They\u2019re always thinking about building something that doesn\u2019t exist yet, and what it would take to get it off the ground.<\/p>\n<p>They often gravitate toward entrepreneurial endeavors, like starting new businesses and planting new churches. It\u2019s what he calls them in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Ephesians+4%3A11-13&amp;version=NIV\">Ephesians 4:11-13<\/a>, where he is laying out five different gifts that God gives his church. These gifts are actually\u00a0<em>people<\/em> that God has gifted and then given to the church\u00a0to build it up and bring it to maturity and unity.<\/p>\n<p>(This is sometimes called <strong>APEST<\/strong> \u2013 Apostles, Prophets, Evangelists, Shepherds, Teachers.\u00a0If you\u2019ve never heard of this, check out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theforgottenways.org\/what-is-apest.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alan Hirsch\u2019s brief descriptions<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vy-B0OJ4Ie4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">JR Woodward\u2019s video introduction<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>Paul\u2019s assumption is that the church needs to grow into the fullness of her identity in Christ, and that these five gifts are crucial to that happening.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, we\u00a0<em>need<\/em> apostles in our churches if we\u2019re going to grow into maturity. The problem is that mature apostles don\u2019t grow on trees. Apostles normally come to our churches immature, in need of encouragement and shaping. How can we do this faithfully and effectively?<\/p>\n<h2>You might be an apostle if\u2026<\/h2>\n<p>Before we talk about <em>immature<\/em> apostles, let\u2019s just talk about apostles. How are they Christ\u2019s gift to the church?<\/p>\n<p>The word apostle signifies someone sent as a delegate or messenger on behalf of someone else. Apostles are \u201csent ones,\u201d gifted to establish the church in new places. <strong>Here are some signs of apostles in general:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They have big ideas\u2013a lot of them.<\/li>\n<li>They don\u2019t give up easily.<\/li>\n<li>They see the frontier and want to take new ground.<\/li>\n<li>They have a history of starting things, especially churches, ministries, or businesses that advance the kingdom of God.<\/li>\n<li>They see opportunity everywhere.<\/li>\n<li>They tend to attract a lot of people to their vision.<\/li>\n<li>They can easily envision how to build organizations and people.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I have a friend who is gifted as an apostle. She has seventeen new ideas before breakfast each day. She is always thinking about what to build next, how to extend the kingdom of God into new places. She networks with leaders all over the country. She\u2019s awesome!<\/p>\n<h2>Signs of an immature apostle<\/h2>\n<p>But apostles don\u2019t come from the factory mature and ready to lead. Like all of us, they start out immature, and their greatest strength is also their greatest weakness.<\/p>\n<p>My apostle friend also struggles to focus on one idea instead of chasing new ones just because they\u2019re new. She often makes hasty decisions in an effort to \u201ckeep moving.\u201d She has a hard time relaxing and being with people when there\u2019s no agenda.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here are some signs of an immature apostle:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They can\u2019t discern between good ideas and \u201cGod ideas,\u201d between the constant flood of innovative thoughts and the ones that God is giving them to do.<\/li>\n<li>They jump around from one idea to the next, unable to stay focused on one thing.<\/li>\n<li>Eventually, people stop following them because they don\u2019t want to give their time and energy to something that will probably change in a few weeks on the apostle\u2019s whim.<\/li>\n<li>They can\u2019t \u201cturn it off\u201d (i.e., take a day off).<\/li>\n<li>They have trouble being part of a group they\u2019re not leading.<\/li>\n<li>They tend to have very little patience with needy people or those who won\u2019t \u201cget on board.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Their projects tend to produce relational carnage; people often feel hurt and used by an immature apostle.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Perhaps you know a couple people like this. (Maybe you\u00a0<em>are<\/em> someone like this?)<\/p>\n<p>One temptation we encounter with immature apostles is to simply <em>use them<\/em> for their energy and capacity. We know we can rely on them to \u201cget things done\u201d and it\u2019s tempting to ignore the immaturity to keep the productivity flowing.<\/p>\n<p>The other temptation is to <em>reject<\/em> immature apostles. When we recognize their ability to make messes in our churches, it\u2019s easy to just marginalize them, keep them out of leadership, just stop responding to them and hope they leave your church.<\/p>\n<p>But instead of <em>using them<\/em> or\u00a0<em>rejecting them,<\/em> we\u00a0<em>disciple them.\u00a0<\/em>That\u2019s what Jesus did with his immature followers\u2026\u00a0<em><strong>So\u00a0how do we disciple immature apostles when we find them in our churches?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<h2>How to disciple an immature apostle<\/h2>\n<p>In some ways, what apostles need to grow in discipleship is the same thing that everyone needs: <strong>an abundance of both grace and truth<\/strong> (this is one of the main competencies we train for in <a href=\"https:\/\/gravitycommons.com\/es\/formation\/\">our formation course<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>We calibrate grace in discipleship by offering connection and compassion in an authentic relationship. We calibrate truth in discipleship by holding\u00a0<em>reality<\/em> in front of others non-anxiously.<\/p>\n<p>This calibration looks different for an apostle than it does for a shepherd or prophet. The grace and truth they need takes on a certain shape. <strong>So what does grace and truth look like for\u00a0apostles?<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Offering grace to an immature apostle<\/h2>\n<p>Here are a few things I\u2019ve learned about\u00a0bringing\u00a0<em>grace<\/em> to an apostle in discipleship:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Apostles need an environment where <strong>failure is OK<\/strong> and expected.<\/li>\n<li>Apostles need to know they aren\u2019t just being pacified, but truly <strong>welcomed and released<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Apostles need an environment where <strong>new ideas aren\u2019t a threat<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Apostles need a <strong>low-control environment<\/strong>. Do not micro-manage them.<\/li>\n<li>Apostles need a <strong>\u201cbig vision\u201d atmosphere<\/strong>. They need to know that they\u2019re involved in something significant.<\/li>\n<li>Apostles need <strong>real, honest, tough critique<\/strong> of their ideas (yes, this feels like <em>grace<\/em> to them \u2013 it shows you\u2019re taking them seriously).<\/li>\n<li>Immature apostles don\u2019t realize they need it, but they need to know that you <strong>value them for\u00a0<em>who they are<\/em><\/strong>, not just what they do.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Offering truth to an immature apostle<\/h2>\n<p>And here are a few things I\u2019ve learned\u00a0about bringing <em>truth<\/em> to an immature apostle:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Apostles need to learn <strong>compassion<\/strong>. Challenge them to care for others as they lead.<\/li>\n<li>Apostles need a <strong>high-accountability environment<\/strong>, especially when it comes to following through on their ideas.<\/li>\n<li>Apostles need to learn to <strong>wait for the \u201cGod idea\u201d<\/strong> in the midst of the sea of merely\u00a0<em>good<\/em> ideas.<\/li>\n<li>Apostles need to learn to be <strong>patient and trust that God is working<\/strong>, even when they\u2019re not.<\/li>\n<li>Most apostles will need accountability to <strong>take a weekly Sabbath<\/strong> (yes, that means a 24-hour period where they do no work \u2013 this is remarkably difficult for immature apostles to embrace).<\/li>\n<li>Apostles need to learn to <strong>disciple and develop <em>people<\/em><\/strong> while they are working on <em>projects<\/em> (their tendency will be to <em>use<\/em> <em>people<\/em> to accomplish the project, rather than <em>use the project to develop people)<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We hosted a FREE webinar with Alan Hirsch called<strong> Why Every Church Needs To Activate APEST\u2026 ASAP!<\/strong>\u00a0Alan has been writing about the importance of fivefold ministry for awhile now, and has some important perspective on how activating APEST can revitalize mission and discipleship in your church.<\/p>\n<h2>Questions for reflection and discussion<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Do you know an immature apostle?
